The Three Lucks
How Feng Shui, Ba Zi and Choice Shape Your Life
In classical Chinese metaphysics, luck is not something you either have or you don’t; it’s something you work with.
Feng Shui is built on the understanding that our lives are shaped by three interwoven forces, known as the Three Lucks: Heaven Luck, Earth Luck and Human Luck. When these three are understood and aligned, life tends to feel clearer, more supported and noticeably easier. When they’re ignored, even the most capable people can find themselves pushing against invisible resistance.
Understanding the Three Lucks offers a way to stop guessing and start making decisions that work with your nature, your environment and your timings.
Heaven Luck: Your Destiny Code
Heaven Luck is the energy you arrived with, the moment you drew your first breath.
In Ba Zi (the Four Pillars of Destiny), this moment is translated into a precise energetic code that reveals who you are at your core.
Your Heaven Luck speaks to your natural strengths and sensitivities, how you’re wired to earn money, how you show up in relationships, where your vitality flows easily and where challenges may arise. It also points to your deeper life calling.
Importantly, Heaven Luck allows for forewarning. Certain life chapters, known as the Big Fates are written into the chart. These are pivotal periods that shape direction: moments of awakening, disruption, redirection or growth. Interestingly, the moment someone truly becomes their own person isn’t always birth. For many, it comes later and Ba Zi often reveals exactly when that shift begins.
Heaven Luck helps you make peace with the past and make more empowered choices in your future. It allows you to see why certain choices were made, why patterns repeat and how your life has been guiding you back toward your authentic self all along. Ba Zi gives us incredible cyclical insight as what goes around, comes around again.
Earth Luck: The Intelligence of Space
Earth Luck is the influence of your environment, the quality, movement and nature of the energy that surrounds you. This is where Feng Shui comes in.
Earth Luck is about how energy enters a space, how it moves, where it gathers and where it becomes blocked. It’s the unseen dynamic that can either support clarity and opportunity, or create friction, fatigue and indecision. When Earth Luck is strong, dilemmas soften, decisions feel clearer and life flows with less effort.
Crucially, Earth Luck is not generic. The way energy affects you is also determined by your Ba Zi, your personal Heaven Luck. Two people can live in the same house and experience it quite differently. This is why my approach with classical Feng Shui begins with considering the people inside the property, not just the building itself.
Feng Shui becomes a way of harnessing what’s available outside your home and bringing it in correctly, aligning space with timing, intention and human need. Earth Luck doesn’t force outcomes but rather helps you create conditions where the right ones can emerge.
Human Luck: Choice, Timing and Wise Action
Human Luck is where everything comes together.
While Heaven Luck shows what’s possible and Earth Luck shapes the environment you’re operating in, Human Luck is about what you actually do with it. It’s the choices you make, the timing of your actions and your willingness to move or wait with discernment.
This is the luck of agency.
Human Luck acknowledges that while certain themes may be laid out for us, outcomes are never fixed. Knowing when to act is often more important than knowing what to do. Ba Zi and Feng Shui together offer guidance on when momentum is available or when patience is wiser. A small, well-timed decision can change everything.
This helps us avoid hustle and wasted energy and take deft action, responding intelligently to opportunity, rather than pushing against the current. Human Luck is where insight becomes lived experience and where foresight offers us opportunity.
Living in Alignment with the Three Lucks
When Heaven, Earth and Human Luck are working together, life tends to feel coherent. Decisions are likely to land more easily, your natural vital energy returns and opportunities appear with less struggle and more ease.
This is the true purpose of Feng Shui and Ba Zi. A way of understanding yourself, your space and your timing well enough to move through life with confidence, clarity and flow.
Luck, after all, is rarely accidental. It’s often the result of seeing what others overlook and knowing exactly what to do, where and when.
